520 $aFrom 1875 to 1878, the Castillo de San Marcos, renamed Fort Marion, located in Florida, was used as a prison for 72 Plains Indians who had been taken prisoner during the Indian wars. They were eventually allowed to visit the nearby town of Saint Augustine. Some gained famed as the "Fort Marion artists" as they recreated in art scenes from their former lives.
