520 1 $a"The aim of this volume is to give some insight into the way translation both from and into L2 is taught in universities at undergraduate level in the UK, France and Germany as we approach the twenty-first century. Changing pedagogical theories have involved many teachers in re-appraising not only the way they teach language, but also the place of translation in the curriculum. One of the most contentious exercises in this curriculum is translating into the foreign language: should we be asking our students to do it at all?" "Three papers outlining current practice in France (two in universities, one in a translation training institute) reflect what may be taken as two extremes in teaching translation, the one focusing on a contrastive taxonomy at the level of the "unit of translation" and the other emphasising the analysis of the source text, followed by the re-writing of its content in the target language, the translator's L1. Between these two apparent extremes, the remaining papers present a variety of reasoned approaches, grounded and tested in classroom practice as well as in contemporary pedagogical and translation theory. Topics covered include subtitling, teaching combined classes of L1 and L2 speakers, the relevance of textual genre, and aspects of the work of professional translators."--BOOK JACKET.
