520 $aThis volume assumes an audience of survey researchers and graduate students with prior training in survey research. It is suitable for a survey researcher contemplating a first use of telephone surveys as a mode of data collection, after experience with some other technique. It also describes the state of the art in the field, and therefore would be useful to researchers already actively using the method. Some chapters of the book address statistical issues and utlize mathematical notation necessary to explicate the topic. Most chapters present quantitative information justifying the conclusions of the authors. This is not a "how to do it" book, but it does contain some descriptions of procedures currently used in different survey organizations. It focuses on the use of the telephone in household surveys, not surveys of businesses or organizations. Finally, it deals with surveys that are designed initially to use the telephone mode. It ignores the large number of ongoing panel surveys which start out as face to face surveys and then, over time, begin to use telephone interviewing as a followup mode. The last section of the volume is a comprehensive listing of the literature in telephone survey methodology.
