520 3 $aThe pantropical Thespesia populnea (Malvaceae) is shown to be clearly separable into two species: T. populnea, which is pantropical on seashores, and T. populneoides of the Indian Ocean area, extending to Hainan Island, usually, but not always, somewhat inland. Hybrids between the two species occur where their ranges touch, and in Ceylon some of these hybrids have been widely propagated vegetatively as ornamentals and “living fence-posts.”
