520 $aThroughout the ages, Tibet has been a place of half-rumour, half-reality. Hidden behind a veil of mountains that few could penetrate, its people developed a way of life and religion that were unique. Then, in 1950, a Chinese army marched into Tibet, claiming to be feeing the Tibetan people from their cruel rulers. Despite constant resistance from Tibetans ever since, Chinese settlers continue to arrive. Tibet's trees are still being cut down and the wood taken away to China. And the monastries are still empty of the gold and jewdls they contained before the Chinese invasion. Tibetans examines the great difficulties facing the people of this country and tries to assess their chances of keeping their culture alive.
