520 $aRecounts the biographies of Rozalia (née Minkin) Solodovnik, born in 1921, and Ester (née Goldberg) Gessen, born in 1923, including the antisemitism they experienced in the USSR under Stalin and afterwards. Their lives were affected by the closing down of the Jewish Anti-Fascist Committee and the "anti-cosmopolitan" campaign, and by popular antisemitism, as both women had romances broken up when their potential partners were revealed to be antisemites. At age 20, Gessen refused to become a KGB informer, while Solodovnik felt she had no alternative to taking a job with Glavlit, the Soviet censorship agency. Pp. 143-181 deal with Gessen's father, Jakub Goldberg, a former member of the Judenrat in the Białystok ghetto. Two versions of his role and fate are presented, based on different sources, and two views about him are discussed, based on the memoir and later view of resistance fighter Chaika Grossman. The career possibilities of Solodovnik's and Gessen's offspring were hindered by Soviet antisemitism, causing them to leave for the USA.$c(From the Bibliography of the Vidal Sassoon International Center for the Study of Antisemitism).
