520 0 $aNumber 18 Dalbeattie Street, Maryhill, is a typical tenement close. It is four years since the end of the war yet some folk still pull their blackout curtains every night. Air-raid shelters stand in back courts. Foodstuffs, coal and cigarettes continue to be rationed. The residents of the twelve flats, with one exception, are a tight-knit community. Their world is not perfect: there is poverty, bigotry, heartbreak and lies; sometimes death. Money is short. Yet not hope, and there is a great strength of spirit aided and abetted by the sound of laughter coming from the close. In Robert Douglas's first novel, he recreates a time and place particular to Glasgow but to which everyone will relate. -- BOOK-JACKET.
