520 $a"In the volume at hand, Hereniko is an ethnographer with a keen eye on his own people, but his vision is not limited by the boundaries of traditional academic principles. His primary focus is on the function of clowning in Rotuman marriage ceremonies, but he is also concerned with the wider phenomena of ritual clowning in the comparative context of Polynesia. Hereniko explores the origins and history of Rotuman clowning, and while his analysis is informed by cultural anthropology, comparative folklore, and the literary arts, it is an innovative departure from traditional ethnography. Hereniko dares to merge objective inquiry with intuitive and subjective insights that are ultimatley rooted in the Rotuman part of his own identity. He draws on his talents as a creative writer and, from the depths of his imagination, provides an origin myth for Rotuman clowning."-- Editor's note.
