520 $aHere is a practical guide to a new and different method of treating addictions in group therapy. Groups are the dominant mode of treatment in most addictions programs, yet the techniques and philosophy employed are derived from older mental health models and do not reflect the new understanding of alcoholism and drug dependency as chronic, progressive diseases. More often than not groups do not work, that is, they do not advance the goals of treatment. Instead the members and their leaders become trapped in one of three static modes, becoming: helpless, hostile, or hopeful and expectant. The authors, experienced substance abuse counselors, show group leaders how to escape these traps and then to identify and nurture moments when the work mode occurs, so that eventually the group assumes responsibility for its own success or failure and in essence treats itself. They have devised an approach which (1) is designed specifically to meet the needs of addictions patients, (2) is appropriate for inpatient or outpatient settings, (3) doesn't require the leader to undertake a great deal of additional training, and (4) takes advantage of the addicts ability to learn. Exercises encourage the reader to analyze transcripts and spot instances of helplessness, hostility, and hopeful expectation as they occur in several addictions groups. Emphasizing that groups for alcoholics and substances abusers need to resemble medical rehabilitation groups rather than psychotherapy, the authors provide keys to structuring and leading these groups for maximum effectiveness. -- from Book Jacket.
