520 $aHeinrich Heshusius (1556-1597) was a Lutheran pastor and polemicist, and from 1593 also a Lutheran superintendent of Hildesheim in Lower Saxony. An examination of his activities, writings, and public sermons sheds light on the Lutheran ecclesiastical culture of the late Reformation, when Lutheranism entered the phase of Orthodoxy, i.e. became a closed religious teaching. Ch. 6 (p. 185-214), "Confessional Conflict in Hildesheim: Struggles with Jews, Jesuits, and Rudolf II", discusses Heshusius's attempt to expel Jews and Jesuits from the city. In 1595 a Jew named Michael Duelke approached Heshusius asking for baptism according to the Lutheran rite. It became known later that Duelke was a habitual thief who tried to evade punishment. Duelke was baptized and after that hanged in Hildesheim. Before this baptism, Heshusius delivered a public anti-Judaic sermon, in which he represented Jews as a subversive community, dangerous for a Christian town. In the same year, it became known that two Jewish widowers had married sisters of their deceased wives, which went against ecclesiastical and imperial laws. Heshusius then ordered the expulsion of both Jews and Jesuits from Hildesheim. Emperor Rudolf II ordered the readmission of the Jews, and some of those expelled returned to the city in 1601.$c(From the Bibliography of the Vidal Sassoon International Center for the Study of Antisemitism).
