520 $aThere is scarcely a legacy of ancient Israel which has so much significance today in the way it still structures time and social life as the weekly day of rest, which can be traced back to the Jewish Shabbat. In this study, Alexandra Grund studies the origins and the significance of the Shabbat. In doing so, she begins by pursuing it back to its possible origins in the Mesopotamian day of the full moon, sab/pattu, and shows the fundamentals of the defining priestly Shabbat theology that is unfolded in a story arc which ranges from the Creation to the revelation at Sinai. Using the genesis of the Shabbat, she also identifies the characteristics of Israel's concept of time and the significance of the day of rest for the culture of remembrance of Israel's people. -- ‡c From publisher's description.
