520 1 $a"The gut is lined by the intestinal epithelium which interacts with the content of the gut. This content consists of ingested foodstuffs and the endogeneous bacterial flora. So far, few studies have dealt with an in depth analysis of the interaction of the gut contents with the covering epithelia. Normal diets and high fibre diets were fed to normal control rats, germ free rats and rats harbouring a human flora.
520 8 $aMorphometric and histochemical analyses revealed that the fibre content of the diet predominantly influences the structure and mucin composition of the small intestine, while bacteria mainly influence the structure of the large intestine. These interactions have to be taken into account in future experiments investigating the gut structure."--BOOK JACKET.
