520 1 $a"The goal in producing infant formula has long been to create an artificial milk that is nutritionally and biologically equivalent to human milk. As our knowledge of the biological functions of maternal milk increases, we have learned to look not only at its purely nutritional values but also at its capacity to guarantee the best intellectual development and the lowest morbidity on a short-, medium- and long-term basis.
520 8 $aThe challenge that infant formula manufacturers face is to come closer to this reference - the metabolic outcome of the breast-fed infant. This workshop begins with a discussion about clinical applications of probiotic agents in infants and children, and the role and function of probiotics in gastrointestinal disorders of infancy and childhood. Next examined are the roles and functions of iron, protein, plasma amino acids, nucleotides, and fatty acids in the nutrition of both breast-fed and formula-fed infants (including preterm infants).
520 8 $aThe data presented during this workshop will be the basis for establishing safety and efficacy of new formulas taking the breast-fed infant as reference."--BOOK JACKET.
