520 $aIn this biography of John Jasper, Hatcher tells the story of the popular Baptist preacher of Richmond, Virginia. Jasper preached as a slave for twenty-five years and continued preaching after the Emancipation until he died at eighty-nine. His funeral sermons, especially, brought him renown and such was his renown that he built the Sixth Mount Zion Baptist Church for his congregation of several thousands. His sermons and ideas about a stationary Earth and a moving Sun brought him especial notoriety.
