520 1 $a"Since 1968, Oberlin College has hosted a German writers-in-residence program, the oldest program of its kind in the United States. This book chronicles the writers-in-residence program from 1968 to 2003, with a section on each of the thirty-five authors, and concludes with a "Kind of Afterword" by the thirty-sixth writer-in-residence, Katja Lange-Muller. Each author's section is divided into four parts: an introductory write-up dating from the time of the author's visit; biographical information since that time; a new fictional or biographical contribution, written by the author expressly for this publication or taken from a previous published work; and an updated bibliography." "The book originated from a much less ambitious project: a questionnaire sent to the thirty-five participants in an effort to document the program. But the authors' responses were so varied and of such great interest that they naturally led to the idea of a book. They range from prose texts and poems featuring or inspired by Oberlin to personal testimonies, reminiscences, diary entries, and letters. Complementing these pieces are texts of three lectures and one very long and impressive poem that were presented by the authors at the conclusion of their visits. The book is bilingual, with most of the new contributions in German, while the introductory texts and most of the biographical updates are in English. The book recalls moments of the last thirty-five years of European history - and European views of a small town in Ohio that has, as this book will also reveal, changed as well as remained the same."--BOOK JACKET.
