520 8 $aThe publication focuses on the street as the place where art today is created, and as a source of inspiration to young artists whose lives and art are marked by an urban and mobile lifestyle. But the street also has its art history tradition: an important figure is the American neo-expressionist, Jean-Michel Basquiat, whose work had a significant influence on the changing forms of Street Culture and Urban Art. Important reference sources of the theoretical argument are Guy Debord's "Théorie de la Dérive" (1956) and Jean Baudrillard's "Kool Killer" oder "Der Aufstand der Zeichen" (1978). To accompany the exhibition in the Kunsthalle Wien, the catalog is dedicated to the "Künstleratelier Strasse" (the street as artist studio) and presents alternative ways of shaping and dealing with public space, traces the line of tradition and introduces a new generation of contemporary artists.
