With four essays on the reception of this iconic work and the different symbolic interpretations. Further essays are concerned with the series of portraits Gauguin made of Jacob Meijer. The Musée Rodin and the Thorvaldsen Museum are the subject of an essay on the Nineteenth Century notion of the artist as an individual.
