520 8 $aSkagens Museum collects works from the painter and sculptor Laurits Tuxen on an ongoing basis, and - together with The Museum of National History at Frederiksborg Castle - holds one of the largest public collections of his art. However the majority of his works are privately owned, and are therefore unknown to the Danish museum-going public. This is surely a key reason that no central overview of his oeuvre exists to date; a factor that has contributed to placing him in the shadows of such better-known Skagen painters as Anna and Michael Ancher, and not least Tuxen’s good friend P.S. Krøyer. 0Today, Tuxen is best known as one of the founders of Skagens Museum, which was founded in 1908. However, he was a permanent presence in Skagen from 1901 until his death in 1927, and it was here that he addressed some of the subjects that also occupied the other Skagen painters: Scenes of private lives in and around the summerhouse known as Dagminne; pictures of beaches, in which the sea or the beach were central; portraits of families or of themselves. Tuxen also renewed some of the known motifs, painting for example the modern bathing lifestyle enjoyed on Skagen’s beaches - nude models in the open air - and also painting Skagen Harbour; one of the few Skagen painters to do so. Tuxen’s late Skagen works bear witness to the fact that he brought to Skagen inspiration and knowledge from his many years abroad; and the inspiration from the French Impressionists is clear in his loose, impasto brush-strokes, set off by pure colours and a pronounced sense of lighting effects.0This exhibition presents, through a series of thematic impacts in Tuxen’s work, the story of a complex artist, who gained great significance not only for his art-political and didactical engagement in the establishment of Kunstnernes Studieskole and Skagens Museum, but also for working simultaneously as a court painter in the royal house of England.0Exhibition: Skagens Museum, Denmark (03.05-14.09.2014).
