520 8 $aLeendert "Leo" Gestel (1881-1941) verbleef als kind tijdens zomervakanties regelmatig bij zijn ooms Dirk en Dimmen Gestel, eigenaren van Drukkerij Gestel & Zoon te Eindhoven. Vooral oom Dimmen, lithograaf en vrij kunstenaar, stimuleerde Leo's tekentalent. Samen werkten ze naar hartenlust in de vrije natuur. De natuur zou voor Leo een waardevolle bron van inspiratie blijven. Net als oom Dimmen accepteerde Leo later commerciële opdrachten en ontwierp bijvoorbeeld litho's voor het Philips concern. Inmiddels behoort Leo Gestel samen met Jan Sluijters en Piet Mondriaan tot Nederlandse bekendste modernisten. De expositie in het Nederlands Steendrukmuseum bevat bijzonder werk van Dimmen en Leo Gestel. Hieruit blijkt dat Leo's kunstenaarschap niet alleen in zijn geboorteplaats Woerden ontkiemde, maar ook in het door hem geliefde Brabant!
