520 $a"The Master of Mount Vernon was but following the custom of his colony when he ordered his plate from London, for it was a Virginian, William Fitzhugh, who had expressed so succinctly the viewpoint of all the colonists when he wrote: 'I esteem it as well politic as reputable, to furnish myself with an handsom cupboard of plate which gives myself the present use and credit, is a sure friend att a dead life, without much loss, or a certain portion for a child after my decease {u2026} ' Used throughout many centuries to describe silverware, the generic term plate probably stemmed from the Spanish plata, although other derivations have been suggested. The ease with which plate could be converted 'without much loss' into the coinage from which much of it was fashioned is a reminder to us that hand-craftsmanship was in colonial America of considerably less value than the metal itself." --$cPage 9.
