520 $aIn 1769, John Samuel Guisan (1740-1801), Swiss-born self-taught engineer, arrived in Suriname to help his uncle in the management of plantations. During his visit to Paramaribo in 1777, the authorizing officer Malouet, entrusted him with the mission to develop the culture of the people of the lowlands in French Guiana and manage the royal slaves involved in public works. Until 1791, he worked as the promotion of "drowned lands", advising, landscaping, building on behalf of the colony and population specific. Back in his homeland, he wrote his memoirs for posterity, in which he delivers an exceptional testimony to his career in Dutch Guiana and French agriculture.
