545 0 $aVictor Herbert (b. Feb. 1, 1859, in Dublin, Ireland; d. May 26, 1924, in New York) was a composer, conductor, cellist, and co-founder of the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP).
520 8 $aThe collection chiefly consists of manuscripts (full and reduced scores, orchestral parts, and sketches) of the theater works of Victor Herbert, including his light operas such as Babes in Toyland, The Red Mill and Naughty Marietta. In addition to his operettas and operas, items include one silent film score, overtures for several feature films, selections written for a number of productions by the Lambs' Club, and selections from several Broadway revues. In addition, the collection includes manuscripts for most of Herbert's large-scale symphonic works, chamber pieces, solo songs and choral compositions. There are Herbert's arrangements of music by other composers as well as a number of concert arrangements of selections from Herbert's stage and screen scores, some by Harold Sanford or Otto Langey.The collection also includes Victor Herbert Orchestra part books and printed music by others. Additional materials include correspondence, programs, clippings, photographs, scrapbooks, promotional materials, iconography and legal papers.
