520 $aAmerica's public schools are profoundly impacted by reforms generated by the state and federal government. These "top down" initiatives are rarely successful. This book explores the experiences of students and teachers in a high school serving a working-class suburb suffering economic decline. Focusing on writing and writing instruction, the author reveals the consequences of standardized assesments on writing, learning, and thinking. This book provides a chilling account of how such reforms have unintended consequences, resulting in outcomes that, ultimately, work against the intended reform.
