520 $aShows how religious orders developed out of the spiritual needs of the world and traces their heroic growth in the midst of worldly temptations and persecutions. Each historical period engendered a different direction in the creation of new orders. Until the twelfth century the prevailing spirit was contemplation--a retreat from the world. The thirteenth century saw the rise of new orders combining monasticism with proselytizing--a reaction to the emerging humanist-scientific world-view soon to become dominant.
