520 $aJosh Billings was the pseudonym of Henry Wheeler Shaw. This is one of Shaw's classic works of typical American humor of the time. He was among the most popular of American humorists and lecturers of the latter half of the 19th century, perhaps second only to Mark Twain. His folksy wisdom was very popular. Thrown out of Hamilton College after one year for stealing the clapper from the chapel bell, he went West on an unsuccessful expedition to the Rockies, became a farmer, coal miner, operator of a dilapidated steamboat auctioneer, etc. before beginning his career as a journalist in Poughkeepsie, NY, in 1858. The author of humorous books and almanacs. he later lectured on the circuit. He died of a stroke while sunning himself on a hotel verandah in Monterey, California.
