520 $a"Abbot Academy of Andover, Massachusetts, was one of the first educational institutions in New England to be founded for girls and women alone and had by far the longest corporate life of any. It opened its doors to seventy students in 1829 and endured until those same doors and all the material goods inside were entrusted to Phillips Academy in 1973. Abbot's sesquicentennial history commands attention not only for what it says about American education and the history of American women but also because it is a good tale worth the telling for its own sake.
