520 $aE-Book Extra: Reading Group Guide for A Ship Made of Paper by Scott Spencer. Daniel Paris--a lawyer who has returned from New York City to Leyden, the small chic town of his emotionally barren childhood--lives with Kate Ellis and is like a father to her daughter, Ruby. But he cannot control his desire for Iris Davenport, the African-American woman whose son attends My Little Wooden Shoe ́s daycare center. During a freak October blizzard, Daniel spends the night at Iris ́s house--her husband, Hampton, stays in the city during the week--and they begin a sexual liaison that eventually imperils both of their marriages, Daniel ́s profession, their children ́s emotional well-being, and their standing among the townspeople. The climactic scene--a search for a blind woman gone missing in the woods--culminates in a tragic accident that permanently, and ironically, alters the lives of the principle characters. With a supporting cast that includes a crusty old Hudson Valley aristocrat and his mistress and his wife, all living together in the same wreck of a mansion, a marauding band of violent city kids who escape from their detention home during the storm, and the preppy, competitive Hampton, who sees racial slights everywhere, this novel is about one man and Everyman. It shows with a keen eye for psychological subtleties and descriptive detail the profoundly disruptive nature of sexual obsession in one specific couple ́s lives, but it also has general implications about the consequences of romantic passion for that fragile construct that we call normal life.
