520 $aOn April 17, 1747, the General Advertiser published a spirited defense of Polly Baker, a hapless lass who was being prosecuted for giving birth to her fifth illegitimate child. Among her claims to innocence, Miss Baker announced that she had only been following God{u2019}s command to increase and multiply. Her arguments provided Deists with one more argument that the laws of nature were superior to the laws of men, and she gave radicals a powerful indictment of the existing order. The problem? Miss Baker did not actually exist. In this book, the author traces the origins and effects of Polly Baker{u2019}s story, ultimately revealing that Miss Baker was invented by Benjamin Franklin.
