500 $aThe territory here treated formed parts of the original counties of Berkeley and Colleton, formed in 1682. No part of it was organized till 1730 when four townships were laid out: Amelia, Congaree (later Saxe-Gotha) and Edisto (later Orangeburg) all in Berkeley co., and New Windsor, in Colleton. In 1768, South Carolina was divided into seven districts or precincts, one of which was Orangeburgh, including all the present counties of Organgeburg, Barnwell, Bamberg and Lexington and the larger part of Aiken.
