Edition Notes
Author supplied by H&L and ESTC; printed in double columns; the DNB and NUC give '[Dublin]' as the place of printing; the DNB mentions 'Laurence' as the printer.
The DNB records that Thomas Emlyn, the 'first unitarian minister in England', became involved with Arianism and Socinianism through the influence of William Manning, but went no further than 'a semi-Arian position. At what date he thus broke with established views is not clear; probably not till 1697'.He accepted an invitation to Dublin from the Presbyterian congregation of Wood Street, and arrived there in May, 1691. On his disclosing his altered views 'the ministers immediately resolved to dismiss Emlynand silence him', but he would not agree to the conditions they tried to impose. Before finally leaving Dublin 'he put to press "An Humble Inquiry into the Scripture Account of Jesus Christ"'; it was published anonymously; 'the printer, Laurence, swore "he knew not whose writing it was"' [DNB]
Caption title: 'A Short Argument concerning the Deity of our Lord Jesus Christ'.
Bound with: James Williamson: 'A Defence of the Doctrines ... ', 1790.
