"Forward: It is the usual thing to say in the preface of such a book as this that words and pictures cannot adequately express the truth of a pipe organ. --Three Centuries of Learning How: An understanding of the Kilgen crest, so familiar to organists and lovers of pipe organs, will perhaps give some insight of this story and the wealth of tradition which lies behind modern pipe organ development. --The Responsibility of an Organ Committee: THE COMMITTEE charged with the selectioon of a pipe organ for a church or auditorium faces a responsibility more far-reaching thaqn the expenditure of a certain sum of money. --How to Purchase an Organ (by Clarence Eddy): During my long experience as a concert and recital organist I have frequently been asked about the purchase of an organ; what particular points should be considered; what number and variety of stops are required for a given space, as well as for the size of the auditorium, theater, hall, church or private home, etc. --Information You Should Furnish the Organ Builder from Which to Prepare Specifications: In the Kilgen factory, each organ is built especially for the auditorium to which it is to be placed. --KILGEN Installations: To select a few installations from the imposing array which bespeaks Kilgen craftsmanship in this country is no easy task. --A Trip Through the Kilgen Plant: The fact is I was a bit dubious of the whole project when they elected me to go to St. Louis and "go through the plant" of the Kilgen Organ Company. --Pipe Organ Voices: The modern organ, with its increased possibilities of electric action and varying wind pressures, is capable of producing practically every sound tht is obtained from instruments in an orchestra, as well as a number of tones peculiar to the organs alone. --Appreciation from World Authorities: Pietro Yon, New York. Kilgen Crest Scroll: Mirabile auditu, "wonderful to hear." Genealogy: (John) George Kilgen (Jr.)(1821-1902) [Baden,Germany] married Christina Hamilton Kunz (1820-1865) and produced from the marriage: Henry Kilgen (1851-1918), George Julius Kilgen, Sr. (1857-1936), Charles Christian Kilgen (Sr.) (1859-1932), Rudolph Frederick Kilgen (1861-1926), and one daughter Margaretha Caroline Kilgen (1853- 1927). Charles Christian Kilgen (Sr.) worked with his father (John) George Kilgen (Jr.) and eventually managed the company, Geo. Kilgen & Son, Inc.. Charles Christian Kilgen (Sr.) married Louise Robyn and produced six children: Alfred, Marie, Charles, George, Louise, and Eugene. All four sons worked with the company.
