For us in the dark

a novel

A novel based on the records of an actual trial. A middle-class, married woman meets a girl who has gotten pregnant by a departing soldier during World War I. The girl wants to get rid of the baby, and the married woman wants a child, so they make a deal. They go off to the country until the baby is born, and then the wife pretends that it's her husband's child, conceived just before he went off to war. The rest of the novel tells the story of the life of the baby, a girl named Francie.
