This exploratory, correlational clinical study, examines the relationships between reported caregiver burden, as measured by the Zarit and Zarit Burden Interview, and cognition and functional ability, as measured by the Functional Independence Measure (FIM), in persons who had experienced traumatic brain injury. Forty-two subjects with traumatic brain injury and their caregivers were studied during their three-month follow-up appointment in clinic after discharge from a single 31-bed inpatient rehabifitation unit. Much time was given to exploring demographic data and relationships to previous studies. Pearson correlation matrixes and a simple, single regression model was utilized to examine the relationships. Functional ability and cognition both negatively affected reported caregiver burden, although not statistically significant. Implications for nursing research and practice are also presented.
