Covers details of an unwanted reaction which could occur during the reprocessing of nuclear fuel. Technetium (VII) would co-extract with the wanted uranium and plutonium and be carried over into the solvent stream.
During subsequent processing hydrazine would be added as a nitrite scavenger, the nitrite being created through the radiolysis of nitrate ions present in the extracted U/Pu nitrate salts. Excess nitrite would interfere with subsequent separation of U/Pu by the reoxidation of reduced species.
The thesis contains details of possible reactions, reaction rates under different reactant concentrations, acidities and ionic strengths of solution in both nitrate and perchlorate solutions.
Other data present are computer modelling of reaction rates, reaction studies using UV/vis spectra and electron spin resonance (esr) studies
