These sketches were issued a few at a time, at irregular intervals, from 1829-1851; a total of 917 sketches were issued.
Irish born lithographer, portraitist and caricaturist, Doyle worked in London as a portrait lithographer and eventually turned to political caricature. His plates were issued by the publisher, Thomas M. McLean. Doyle used the pseudonym H.B. to sign most of his works. He was considered to be the first political caricaturist of the 19th century.
