This short booklet is written in two sections. First, is the first hand account of Alfonso Steele, the last surviving soldier of the Battle of San Jacinto at the time of publication. Mr. Steele relays his personal story of how and why he traveled to Texas and became a part of the group that fought Santa Anna. His is a fascinating look at the camp life and recovery from the wounds he sustained during the battle. When one thinks of tales of the Wild West, this is what folks think about. The second first part is a first hand account written by Sam Houston. It reveals details from the commanders point of view. His account also specifically lists the names of many of the men who fought in the battle. A list of killed and wounded are included. Sam Houston lists Steele's name as one severely wounded. I would recommend this document as a source to anyone interested in the story or doing research on the Battle of San Jacinto. The booklet was published by a newspaper publisher who obviously knew Mr. Steele and apparently had great respect for him. There was a handwritten note added to the booklet which denoted the death date of Mr. Steele. It seems the publisher understood the importance of preserving the history of this man's personal story.
