Katie Bowen and Ronan O’Hanlon were born in neighboring households in Glen Valley in 1968 in rural Tralee, Co. Kerry. They grew up together sharing a baptism ceremony in the small church and later they are reunited in secondary school. They are both farmers’ kids who are very naïve and innocent. They have always been childhood friends but it develops into a special friendship. They drift into a relationship. Ronan asked Katie to be his partner at his end of school ball in the 1980s but it goes terribly wrong. He gets drunk and does something dreadful.

They date for fourteen months and soon realize this is the real deal. They love each other and marriage is on the cards. They marry and have a three wedding day party and everything appears to be perfect for years but as they let the poor days pass fate blows them a cruel blow.
