Matthias "Martin" Paulen Rethlefsen was born 1832 in Langenhorn, Bredstedt, Schleswig. He came to America as a stowaway, then walked across the country, first to the California gold fields in 1858, arriving on San Juan Island in 1861. He married Nellie George, an Indian born on Saanich, near Victoria, Vancouver Island in 1864. They had 9 children. He was among the earliest pioneers on San Juan Island.
