victory over the Muslim Turks. Oct. 7,
1571. John of Austria led combined
Spanish, Venetian and papal fleets which
crushed the Turkish fleet in the Gulf of
Patras near Lepanto, Greece. The battle
somewhat moderated the power of the
OTTOMAN EMPIRE.
