Some things to note about this shorter second edition:
1. 55 stories by 49 major writers. A compact edition of a best-selling anthology, this new text has fewer stories and commentaries, but retains all of the longer book's flexible editorial apparatus.
2. 28 commentaries allow students to hear directly from short story writers about the short story. 24 of the writers -as well as three other important literary figures - comment on the form of the short story, on specific stories in the book, and on writing short fiction.
