...The next day I was put on a train for Dewdney a whistle stop up the valley. It was pitch dark when I arrived. The train went past the stop about half a mile or so, and I was put off on the side of the track, kit bag and suitcase, 14 years old, and all by myself. I didn't know which way to go. There were no lights to guide me. I believe I cried.
