Two corpses have been found. One on the riverbank and the other in an isolated farmhouse. They have been savagely beaten and the skin flayed from their bodies with their throats slit. On both victims the DNA of Charlie Pope, a convicted sex offender, has been found, and now all Davenport has to do is find him. But something doesn't sit well with Davenport because the killings appear to be calculated and methodical, and Pope is of low mental intelligence. He is incapable of the forethought and planning that these killings would have required. However, all the evidence points right at Pope - but Davenport isn't convinced of his guilt, and to find the answers he needs to locate Pope, and to do this he will need the help of three vicious serial killers who are as cunning as they are deranged...

Work Description

The first body is of a young woman, found on a Minneapolis riverbank, her throat cut, her body scourged and put on display. Whoever did this, Lucas Davenport knows, is pushed by brain chemistry. There is something wrong with him. This isn't a bad love affair. The second body is found three weeks later, in a farmhouse six miles south. Same condition, same display--except this time it is a man. Nothing to link the two victims, nothing to indicate that the killings end here. "This guy "Lucas said. He took a deep breath, let it out as a sigh. "This guy is going to bust our chops." And soon he is going to do far, far worse than that

Excerpts

CHARLIE POPE TRUDGED down the alley with the empty garbage can on his back, soaked in the stench of rancid meat and rotten bananas and curdled blood and God knew what else, a man whose life had collapsed into a trash pitand still he could feel the eyes falling on him.
