Edition Notes

First ed. of the collection called "Le petit Marot." Plates lack numbers that were added by Mariette for his 2nd ed. of ca. 1738. The 1st ed. was issued a number of times, probably beginning within Marot's lifetime. It contained from 112 to 115 plates, sometimes more. For all, see Mauban.

Mauban, A. Jean Marot, p. 99 ff.

Getty c. 1 has etched title leaf and [106] plates. The plates have been numbered 1-106 in pencil at the upper right. Plate [21] bound in upside down. Plate [37] a cancel, mounted in window cut in the leaf.

Getty c. 2 has etched title leaf and [123] plates. The last 7 plates are listed by Mauban under the heading "Eglises et portails inventés par Marot" (p. 107), but include as well an elevation of the Pantheon in Rome and a "Mausolee," numbered 3 at the upper right.

There are twelve additional plates bound in at the end of c. 2, which Mauban notes are sometimes found in copies of the Petit Marot. Six of these are a suite of six plates of "portes en placard," which Mauban says are numbered, though those in the present copy are not (p. 171). Three others are additional "portes en placard," two of them signed by Jean Marot and one by his son Daniel. Of the three remaining supplementary plates, one is titled "Porte Cochere," the other two "Manteau de Cheminée."

Binding, c. 1: 19th-century decorated paper. Back and foredges in green calfskin, tooled in blind. Spine tooled in gilt. Page edges gilt. At head of front free endpaper verso is pencilled signature of E.K. Waterhouse.

Binding, c. 2: old sprinkled calfskin. Spine and edges of boards tooled in gilt. Spine title in gilt. Page edges red. Centered on front pastedown is armorial bookplate of Galard de Béarn (see Rietstap). On 2nd front free endpaper recto is a 19th-century engraved bookplate by Stern (Paris), with a monogram comprised of E and F.
