The collection contains materials related to the Kaufmans' personal lives and professional careers. The correspondence series contains letters to and from prominent musical and artistic figures of the 20th century, including Milton Avery, Samuel Barber, Robert Russell Bennett, David Burli︠u︡k, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Carlos Chávez, Aaron Copland, Norman Cousins, David Diamond, Olin Downes, Vladimir Dukelsky (Vernon Duke), Louis M. Eilshemius, Albert Einstein, Gerald Finzi, Morton Gould, Jonathan Griffin, Jascha Heifetz, Bernard Herrmann, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Fritz Kreisler, Nikolai Lopatnikoff, Gian Francesco Malipiero, Bohuslav Martinů, Darius Milhaud, Madeleine Milhaud, Dimitri Mitropoulos, Daniel Pinkham, Walter Piston, Quincy Porter, Francis Poulenc, Maud Powell, George Rochberg, Miklós Rózsa, Henri Sauguet, Frank Sinatra, Nicolas Slonimsky, William Grant Still, Ernst Toch, Alice B. Toklas, Ralph Vaughan Williams, and Karl With. The subject files relate to individuals and organizations of personal or professional interest to Louis and Annette Kaufman. The programs series contains printed concert programs for performances by the Kaufmans, and for concerts they attended. Nineteen scrapbooks compiled by the Kaufmans document their professional music activities. The photographs include publicity shots and candid photographs of Louis and Annette Kaufman and photographs of their friends and colleagues from the music world. The collection also includes publicity posters, an award, and a bronze bust of Ernst Toch.

Louis Kaufman (b. May 10, 1905, in Portland, Oregon; d. Feb. 9, 1994, Los Angeles, Calif.) was a violinist. His wife, Annette Leibole Kaufman was a pianist who served as his accompanist for more than fifty years.
