The story tells of a young mother whose marriage was "arranged" to an older, but very devoted man. The couple and their infant son emigrate to the United States from Germany in 1860. Within a few years, Elizabeth's husband enlists in the Union army and does not return from the Civil War. A daughter is born after the husband's departure and Elizabeth is now faced with many difficulties. The beautiful and enterprising young mother encounters many obstacles but works tirelessly to overcome all.
She eventually meets a charming gentleman and contemplatres marriage to him. But she is warned by many that he is really an unscrupulous scoundrel. Should she believe them, or go forward with her new marriage?
The plot has many situations and facets which the reader will enjoy.
