This book is a social and cultural history of the years 1830-1917 up to the First World War, tracing the three phases of the Adirondack resort era with the arrival to the North Woods of sportsmen and artists beginning in 1830. After 1865 business and professional men with their families arrived from New York and Boston primarily. They were followed by prominent people from the stage, dance hall and screen, many of whom built large camps and entertained their friends during the season. In retrospect the era as a whole reflects a style of American life long since vanished of a colorful and distinguished group of people who once summered on the Lake's shores
