Battery Hamilton was identified in 2001 as part of a survey to identify cultural resources on the Bird/Long Island Wetland Mitigation Site (Savannah River). Battery Hamilton on Bird Island is a Civil War (Federal) gun emplacement about three miles upstream from Fort Pulaski; its role in the siege and capture of Fort Pulaski in April 1862 included preventing Confederate supply boats, gunboats, and reinforcements from descending the river. Study addresses stability of the site and degree to which structural remains have been preserved.
