Edition Notes
Colophon date 1595.
Getty copy has 7 preliminary leaves, though the register on DD5r calls for 6 and Adams notes that there may be only 4. The first leaf is the engraved title, followed by the engraved title leaf from the preliminary ed. of 1593, which comprised the plates only without the text. 3rd and 5th leaves (both signed [dagger]2) are different type-settings of the dedication to Clement VIII, signed by Jacobus Ximenes, Secretary of the Society of Jesus; the type-setting of the 5th leaf appears identical to that of the dedication in the Getty copy of the 1593 ed., but has a different engraved vignette and woodcut initial. 4th leaf is the papal permission granted to Nutius, signed by Vestrius Barbianus. 6th leaf (signed [dagger]3) and 7th leaf have the preface and first index; they appear identical to those leaves in the 1593 ed.
Plates engraved by Antonie, Jeronimus and Jan Wierix, Adriaen and Jan Collaert, and Carel van Mallery, mostly after designs by Bernardino Passeri and Maarten de Vos. The plates are arranged in sequence by roman numerals at upper right, corresponding to the order of Gospel readings through the year. A second sequence of Arabic numerals at upper right corresponds to the order of incidents in Christ's life, by which the preliminary ed. of 1593 was arranged. Three engraved head- and tail-pieces. Woodcut head- and tail-pieces, initials.
Plates in Getty copy are in early condition, with Bernardino Passeri's name appearing in all but ten; see M.B. Wadell, Evangelicae historiae imagines, p. 18.
Signatures: [dagger]⁶ A-Zz⁶ AA-DD⁶.
361-362 omitted in paging.
Adams N54

Binding: modern red goatskin, signed by Allô on lower front turn-in. Boards tooled in gilt with central arabesque medallion and 2 frames of double fillets, fleurons at corners of the inner frame. Spine tooled in gilt with title & imprint. Edges of boards and turn-ins tooled in gilt. Page edges gilt. Silk ribbon place marker.
