Bernd and Hilla Becher Speak with Moritz Neumüller

  • 1 Want to read

Bernd and Hilla Becher began their collaboration in 1959 taking photographs of mines and workers' housing in the industrial area of Siegen, Germany. Engineers and architectural theoreticians were the first to appreciate their work. In 1969, their Anonymous Sculptures exhibition was organised simultaneously with a retrospective of American minimal art and many critics pointed out the affinities between the two projects, particularly in regard to the sobriety of forms and the presentation in series. Since then, their prestige within the art world has grown continuously. Their work, which is not easy to classify, reflects both the history of documentary photography in the twenties and the conceptual art of I the seventies. The couple speaks about all of this with Moritz Neumüller, Director of Activities for PHotoEspaña, the International Festival of Photography and Visual Arts, who is also a freelance curator, during an intensive review of their biography, professional careers and the works that have made them major figures in contemporary photography.
