Edition Notes
Holograph, signed.
Joseph Ricketson sends this letter to Weymouth not knowing whether Deborah Weston has returned from Staten Island. He hopes that Maria (Weston Chapman) has entirely recovered. He tells, at length, about the sickness and care of "Sarah Ann." Joseph Ricketson has decided against letting his son work in a cordage factory. There were several public meetings on behalf of the enlistment of black people, especially a "Rouser" last week, in which Colonel Maggi and others made fine speeches. Joseph Ricketson says: "Maggi was with Garibaldi in Montevideo & there were three thousand Blacks in Garibaldi's Army---he had also fought with them in Africa---Both He & Garibaldi give them the credit of being good soldiers." Joseph Ricketson hopes that Maggi will be made a Brigadier General. "Sigel thinks everything of him." General (John E.) Wool and Governor (John Albion) Andrew were here with their staffs, and Joseph Ricketson had conversations with both of them.
